In Memory

Chris Lowery

Chris died June 1, 2021 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease in 2019 and prostate cancer in 2020.

He graduated from Philips Exeter Academy and earned double honors degrees in English and psychology from Swarthmore, followed by a master's degree in screenwriting from Stanford. According to Steve Fox, with whom he stayed in contact over the years, he returned to the Washington, D.C. area and worked initially writing/editing/programming for various consulting firms and later settled into a career as a handyman  and dog walker.  When he became ill, he moved to Scottsdale to be near his brother Nick (to his right in the photo).

Chris had a twin brother, Mark, and another younger set of twin siblings, Nick and Anny.

Their father, Sidney Lowery, was a senior intelligence analyst for the C.I.A., according to Nick, who met their mother, Hazel, when he was posted in England. She translated captured German documents having to do with concentration camps. Chris grew up in Washington, where the next-door neighbor was Supreme Court Justice Byron (Whizzer) White, Nick, a retired NFL player, told the New York Times in 1996.

Right after we graduated, Chris set me up with a job interview at the Guardian newspaper in London. It was so kind of him and I remember him with fondness. My condolences to his family.
