The sunset of December 3rd 1949, ushered in the life of Edward Joseph Casselle, the man we affectionately knew as Ed, Uncle Joe, Uncle Ed, Joe, and Joey born to his loving late parents Charles Chauncy Casselle and Flora S. Casselle. Ed graduated from Swarthmore College class of 1973 in Swarthmore, PA. with a degree in economics. Ed worked for PNC Bank for over twenty-one years and received many awards and accolades for his fine services. In international banking, he structured and managed many creative solutions including international trade and treasury challenges. He was known for his skills in developing financial, organizational, and marketing strategies for internationally active corporations. For six years, he served as senior manager, of the Paris Branch, which covered Europe. He later served as President for PNC International Bank in New York. From 1997-98 he was Group Vice President, Small and New Business for the Export-Import Bank of the United States, in Washington, DC. In 1999, he became Deputy Assistant Secretary for Africa, International Trade Administration, Department of Commerce in Washington, DC. In that capacity he traveled throughout Africa as a Senior U.S. Government Policymaker. He was a principal architect of the DOC outreach strategy for maximizing Africa's utilization of the benefits from the African Growth and Opportunity Act. In 2001-02, he served as Executive Director of the Emergency Steel Loan Guarantee Program in Washington, D.C, where he focused on facilitating funding for the recovery of the steel industry. In recent years, Ed worked as a consultant in governance and anticorruption. Ed served on the Board of Directors of the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution for seven years, including Chairman of the Development Committee. In that capacity he was a steady force on a volatile board whose theme was the importance of exposing the Museum to the masses. Through his persistence, the number of friends and attendees increased substantially. His colleagues on the Board described him as a "thoughtful, engaging, gentle soul". Ed took pride in many philanthropic endeavors, most notably his work as President of the Board of Directors at Craig House School for Emotionally Disturbed Children in Pittsburgh, Pa. His rich and abundantly loved life came to a sudden end on Tuesday, February 5th in Washington, DC. He will be sorely missed by all. Ed leaves to mourn: his loving wife, Greta; daughters Emilie and Yvette; brother and sister and host of other relatives and friends. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008, 11 a.m., at St. Albens Parish, 3001 Wisconsin Ave, N.W., Washington, DC. Arrangements by JOHNSON AND JENKINS FUNERAL HOME. The National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution has established a fund, The Ed and Greta Casselle Fund, in honor of his dedication to the mission of the Museum.
