John Gilbert Power

John Gilbert Power died at his home in Derby Line, Vermont on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 of melanoma.

He was born on November 16, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Gordon and Ethel Power. He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1973 with a Bachelor’s Degree and earned his MLS from the University of Maryland. He served as a librarian in Carroll County, Maryland until he moved to Vermont in 1984 to serve as Regional Librarian at the Northeast Regional Library in St. Johnsbury. He decided to change careers and attend law school and graduated from Vermont Law School in 1991. He practiced law in New York City for four years. He survived the first attack on the World Trade Towers in 1993, having to climb down 59 flights of stairs to safety along with his co-workers. He moved to Boston to work for one year before he returned to Vermont to work as Public Defender and then open his own law office with a partner, Doug Willey.

On July 13, 1985 he married Carol Rund Swett, who survives him. He is also survived by two daughters, Kim Swett and Colleen Swett and by a grandson, Brandon Swett. He leaves his stepmother Cathe of Phoenix, Maryland; siblings and their families: Gordon Power, Redlands, California; Garret Power, Baltimore, Maryland; Steve Power, Monkton, Maryland; Vallie Larson, Monkton, Maryland; Andrea Burgoyne, Cockeysville, Maryland; and Adrienne Smith, Monkton, Maryland.
