Summarize what you've been up to for the last 50 years.
After Swarthmore (summer 1973) I drove my '57 VW to Ithaca, NY and started my MS there at Cornell, where I got my degree in Mechanical Engineering, made many great friends, and got hitched to Sue in 1975. We drove our decrepit Chevy van to Berkeley, CA where I started my PhD, had a beautiful daughter (Jessie), made many great friends, and eventually got my degree in 1979. Sue and Jessie and I made the next big drive in a Mazda GLC out to Ann Arbor, MI in 1980. I taught mechanical engineering at Michigan for 36 years and recently retired July 2016. Sue taught ESL at Washtenaw Community College and retired a few years earlier. Jessie was living in manhattan, but is now back in Michigan. Over the years I have kept in touch with Dane Panetta, and had brief interactions with '73 classmates Anne Warren, Don Boy, Carl Courant, and Rob Weissman. So far, retirement has been great with lots of travel (e.g., Banff, Italy, Croatia, Hawaii, Egypt) and fun (e.g., golf, canoeing, hiking, reading, shows) as well as continued professional activities (e.g., research, lectures, consulting, service). Recently I have been volunteering to for organizations to end gerrymandering and strengthen democracy. http://umich.edu/~ulsoy
