Summarize what you've been up to for the last 50 years.

Started as a newspaper reporter; then a bicycling magazine editor; then a freelancer doing mostly bicycling stuff. My wife Anne, a Yale grad, brought two wonderful children into our world. A glutton for punishment, I spent 12 years on my school board, and I'm currently treasurer of my library board.

As we approach the 50th anniversary of our graduation from Swarthmore, how has your experience there shaped your life?

Somebody had to be in the bottom half at Swarthmore. I qualified for that role.
But I was inspired by the intellectual tenacity and scholarship of many of you, and I like to think that I have followed that example.
